San Antonio Chihuahua Rescue Adoption Process

San Antonio Chihuahua Rescue is primarily concerned for the health, safety and welfare of our rescued Chihuahuas. Each year the number of applications we receive is much greater than the number of Chihuahuas available for adoption. This means that your application may be denied for one of several reasons. SACR has no paid employees, we are volunteers with jobs, families, pets, and foster Chihuahuas. Please be patient with our application and adoption process. Impatient applicants make impatient Chihuahua owners and that is a trait which is unacceptable for a rescued dog.

Before you Apply

Common reasons that require application denial include, but are not limited to:

  • Failure to provide documentation of current pet vaccinations and heartworm preventative
  • The use of an invisible fence or pet door without an appropriate locking mechanism
  • Unacceptable personal or veterinarian reference
  • Children under the age of 8
  • Request for a Chihuahua that has not been spayed or neutered
  • Chihuahua to be a gift for a third party
  • Household with pets that are not spayed/neutered unless due to a verifiable medical reason
  • Households with too many existing pets or larger indoor pets

Most of our Chihuahuas are rescued from kill shelters and therefore we rarely have a Chihuahua that we feel would be suitable for placement in a home with children under 8 years old.

Please think about how YOUR state of health and age will affect the future of your new dog. Each year thousands of dogs are abandoned or euthanized when their owners enter a nursing home and their families do not have the desire, space or the ability to care for the displaced dog. Please consider the adoption of an older Chihuahua. The senior dog has so much love left to give and can live up to 20 years with good veterinary care.

Our adoption donation is $125 and includes spay or neuter and all routine vaccinations. Our Chihuahuas are heartworm negative and have been treated for worms if necessary. Routine dentals are performed if deemed necessary by our veterinarian.

We accept cash or checks for adoption donations.

Application Process

  1. Submit a completed application
  2. Submit veterinarian reference
  3. Submit 2 personal references
  4. After steps 1-3 have been reviewed a home visit will be scheduled to verify the accuracy of the application and to make sure that no conditions exist that could cause injury/death to the Chihuahua.
  5. After application and home visit approval, an adoption contract is completed and the adoption occurs.
